PALO ALTO, Calif.—2012 US Olympian Maggie Steffens scored four goals as No. 2 Stanford (20-1, 5-0 MPSF) defeated CSU Bakersfield 20-5 in MPSF water polo action Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinal, which defeated No. 1 UCLA 8-7 on Saturday, led 2-1 with 5:30 to play in the first quarter. Stanford scored on their next eight possessions for a 10-2 lead. The Cardinal led 15-2 at halftime. Stanford outscored CSUB 5-3 in the second half. Jamie Neushul and Ashley Grossman each scored four goals for the Cardinal.
"It wasn't a great first quarter for us," said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. "We improved during the rest of the game, but we can't be giving up 10 goals in any quarter."
Janelle Shelby (Sr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) scored twice for the Roadrunners. Bridgette Souza (R-Sr., La Jolla, Calif., Sonoma State), Niki De Leon (Jr., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS), and Nicola Barrett (R-So., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS) scored the remaining Roadrunner goals.
The Roadrunners (12-14, 0-5 MPSF) conclude the regular season next Saturday at San Jose State. The match begins at 1 p.m. The winner of the CSUB-Spartans match will be the sixth seed at the Apr. 24-26 MPSF Tournament which will be hosted by Arizona State.
"We need to start thinking about San Jose right away," Gall said.
