THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield had its eight-game winning streak snapped by No. 20 Santa Clara, but the Roadrunners bounced back to defeat Cal Lutheran at the Cal Lutheran Tina Finali Invitational Saturday.

The Broncs defeated CSUB 12-11 in the opener. Santa Clara led 7-4 at halftime and held off a CSUB charge that was led by Kristen Jensen (So., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. (Los Osos HS) who scored six goals. Niki De Leon (Jr. Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS) scored twice as did Katie Benson (So., La Crescenta, Calif., Crescenta Valley HS).

“We gave up too many first half goals and missed too many opportunities early on,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “It was two completely different halves. The second half was probably the best half we have played all year. We can't spot a team an early lead.”

CSUB bounced back with an 18-5 victory over Cal Lutheran to conclude tournament play for the Roadrunners. CSU Bakersfield led 10-4 after three quarters before exploding for eight goals in the fourth quarter. Four players, Tancy Aldridge (So., Lompoc, Calif., Cabrillo HS), Nicola Barrett (R-So., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS), Lauren Paulson (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS), Ashley Paz (Fr., Upland, Calif., Upland HS) scored three goals. Janelle Shelby (Sr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) made four steals and had one goal.

“We had 12 assists on the 18 goals, which means we were looking for our teammates and playing unselfishly,” Gall said. “We had great energy and did a nice job of putting the ball away. I thought all of our freshmen did a great job in this game. They played the entire fourth quarter I'm really excited to see how this group will continue to improve.”

CSU Bakersfield travels to UC Santa Barbara Sunday for a pair of games. The day begins against No. 19 UC San Diego at 1 p.m. and concludes at 4 p.m. against the No. 17 Gauchos. CSU Bakersfield opens home action Mar. 7 against Arizona State at 1 p.m. Admission is free to the Hillman Aquatics Complex.
