Roadrunners Host Utah Valley Thursday Night

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- The CSUB Roadrunners continue their Western Athletic Conference home stand Thursday night host Utah Valley (8-12, 3-3 WAC) at the Icardo Center. The Roadrunners have won three-straight as they are seeking their first four-game winning streak of the season while also a chance to take over third place in the WAC.

The 'Runners are coming off Saturday's 71-61 overtime victory over Seattle where Aly Ahmed (Jr., Alexandria, Egypt, Midland CC) scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the victory. Ahmed scored nine points in a crucial 12-0 run in the second half that gave CSUB the lead. He also scored six points in overtime, all coming from the free throw line to seal the CSUB win. For his efforts Ahmed was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season.

The Roadrunners also enter having won three straight games for the first time since their December 20-31 streak that including their road win at Cal. CSUB is looking for four straight wins for the first time this season.

CSUB continues to be led by Ahmed who is averaging 15 ppg for the 'Runners while shooting a team-best 51% from the field. Ahmed also leads the 'Runners in free throw attempts (102) and made free throws (79) this season. He is second on the team in rebounding at seven per contest.

Ahmed has received a lot of support recently as Kevin Mays (Jr., Queens, N.Y., Odessa CC) continues to lead the WAC in rebounding at 8.3 per contest. Mays also recorded double-doubles in each of the last two games. Mays also leads the conference in 10-rebound performances with nine including three in WAC play this season.

Javonte Maynor (R-Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Georgia State) also continues to improve offensively for the 'Runners after a slow start. Maynor has scored in double-figures in each of the last five games following his 11 points against Seattle. Maynor is also shooting 44% from the field and three-point range during conference games.

Utah Valley split their conference series last week, defeating Chicago State on Jan. 19 78-62 before falling to Missouri-Kansas City 66-59 on Saturday night. Zach Nelson had 16 in the loss to UMKC while Marcel Davis led the Wolverines with 19 in the win over Chicago State.

Utah Valley won last year's regular-season WAC championship before losing in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament and the first round of the NIT. The Wolverines lost four seniors from that squad but have six returners from that championship team that won both meeting against CSUB last season.

Senior forward Mitch Bruneel leads Utah Valley with 13 ppg following by Williams who is chipping in 11 per contest. Williams however has been the go-to scorer in conference games, leading Utah Valley with 15.5 ppg.

Tip off for Thursday's game is scheduled for 7 P.M. The game will also be available on the WAC Digital Network at www.WACSports.com/watch and on Newstalk 1180 and 96.1 FM KERN beginning with the Dignity Health Pregame Show at 6:30.
