RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The CSU Bakersfield water polo team extended its winning streak to six with a pair of victories at the second Cal Baptist Mini Saturday.

The Roadrunners defeated Whittier 14-9 in the opener. The Poets are ranked sixth in the current CWPA Division III Top 10 poll.  CSUB overcame an 8-6 third quarter deficit with a six-goal third quarter.  At one point, CSUB scored on five straight possessions. The 'Runners turned up the defense and did not allow a Whittier goal over the final 9:36 of the match.

Kristen Jensen (So., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Los Osos HS) charted a season best five goals to pace the Roadrunners.  Nicola Barrett (R-So., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS) added a hat trick while Jada Helberg scored twice.

“We need to start the game stronger,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “We had a nice second half, we got stops on defense, and that turned into some high percentage counters for us.”

The Roadrunners defeated Redlands 17-6 in the nightcap. The Bulldogs are ranked ninth in the current CWPA Division III Top 10 poll.  CSUB shutout Redlands 3-0 in the first period and would take a 9-2 lead into halftime.

Four players, Jensen, Barrett, Gabby Wiltse (Fr., Gig Harbor, Wash., Peninsula HS), and Jillian Wulf (Fr., Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) each charted three goals. Lauren Paulson (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) added two goals. Goalies Courtney Courtney Wahlstrom (So., Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) and Brittany Tyra (Jr., Grass Valley, Calif., Sierra College) combined for 14 saves.

“We got off to a nice start with the first quarter shutout,” Gall said. “We had some nice offensive assists. It was another good weekend.”

CSUB is off until Feb. 27 when the Roadrunners travel to the Cal Lutheran Tina Finali Invitational. CSUB faces Villanova at 9:15 a.m. and La Verne at 1 p.m. CSU Bakersfield opens home action Mar. 7 against Arizona State at 1 p.m. Admission is free to the Hillman Aquatics Complex.
