BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team welcomes WAC leaders Texas-Pan American and New Mexico State this week.
CSUB hosts UTPA Thursday at 7 before welcoming New Mexico State to the Icardo Center Saturday at 1. The Roadrunners enter this week third in the WAC with a 5-3 record. Texas-Pan American is second with a 6-2 mark. Both teams trail New Mexico State who is 8-0 on the year. The seven eligible WAC teams qualify for the WAC Tournament Mar. 11-14 with the No. 1 seed getting a first round bye.
Saturday will serve as CSUB's Valentine's Day Pink Game. Adult fans wearing pink will receive admission for $8. Children wearing pink will receive a $3 ticket. The first 200 fans through the doors of the Icardo Center receive a 'Think Pink' wristband for Breast Cancer Awareness.
Texas-Pan American defeated CSUB 77-60 Jan. 17 in Edinburg. The Roadrunners lead the all-time series 7-2. At 13-10, The Broncs are off to the best 23-game start in the program's history. Shawnte' Goff is second in the WAC in scoring with a 15.4 ppg average. Goff is also fifth in the league in steals (1.82). T'Ondria Nolen paces the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.61.
NM State rallied from 20 points down with 9+ minutes to go in regulation to defeat the Roadrunners 90-78 in overtime Jan. 15 in Las Cruces. The all-time series between the two schools is tied at two. New Mexico State has won 11 in a row, the third longest such streak in school history, entering this week. The Aggies are 15-6 overall.
Sasha Weber earned College Sports Madness WAC Player of the Week honors on Monday after averaging 17 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.5 steals in two games a week ago. Weber (14.3), Shanice Davis (13.2), and Brianna Freeman (12.4) are all averaging in double figures. Weber is currently third in the WAC in scoring.
Batabe Zempare posted her ninth and 10th double-doubles of the year as CSUB went 1-1 last week. The 6-2 forward scored 12 points and had 13 rebounds in the 70-58 loss to Utah Valley Feb. 5. Zempare scored 11 points and had 16 rebounds in the 65-60 victory over Grand Canyon. Feb. 7. She averaged 2.5 steals per game for the week.
Alyssa Shannon played at least 40 minutes for the seventh time this season at Grand Canyon. Shannon played 39 minutes at Utah Valley. Shannon has played all but 54 of a possible 615 minutes for the 'Runners since Dec. 11.
Tyonna Outland averaged 15.5 points per game last week for the Roadrunners. The all-time leading scorer at CSUB (1880), Outland broke Kelley Tarver's school record (121) for games played in a career this week. She has played in 123 games at CSUB, starting 100 times. She now holds four school career records and five CSUB Division I season records.
