BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The CSU Bakersfield wrestling team welcomes No. 1 Penn State to the Icardo Center Friday night. The first match is set for 7 p.m. Coverage is available on the Roadrunner Sports Network (http://www.youtube.com/csubathletics).
Penn State is 2-0 in dual competition; The Nittany Lions remain the top-ranked team in the country in the Nov. 17 release of InterMat Wrestling's Tournament Power Index (TPI). Head coach Cael Sanderson's squad also tops InterMat's Dual Meet Rankings. This marks the fourth straight week that Penn State, with eight ranked individuals, holds the No. 1 spot in the TPI.
Senior Morgan McIntosh (2-0), the lone California native in the PSU lineup (Santa Ana) is ranked No. 1 at 197. Sophomore Zain Retherford is ranked No. 2 at 149 with a 2-0 mark and senior Nico Megaludis is ranked No. 4 at 125 with a 1-1 record. Redshirt freshman Jason Nolf is ranked No. 4 at 157 with a 2-0 record.
Junior All-American Jimmy Gulibon is ranked No. 5 at 141 at 1-1. Senior All-American Jordan Conaway is ranked No. 8 at 133 with a 2-0 record while redshirt freshman Bo Nickal is ranked No. 8 at 174 at 2-0. Sophomore Matt McCutcheon is ranked No. 14 at 184 with a 2-0 record.
CSUB improved to 3-1 last week when the Roadrunners defeated Cal Baptist28-12 in “Take It Outside II” on the CBU front lawn Nov. 14. The Roadrunners won seven of the 10 matches against the Lancers. On Sunday, CSUB hosted the fifth Roadrunner Open where three 'Runners took home individual titles; Ian Nickell (141), Bryce Hammond (174), and redshirt Lorenzo De La Riva (157). In three open tournaments this season, Roadrunners have won 12 individual titles.
Adam Fierro (165), Hammond, and Reuben Franklin (197) are nationally ranked this week. Fierro is in six individual polls with a high of 13th coming in both the InterMat and the OpenMat. Hammond is ranked in six polls with a best of 10th occurring in the OpenMat poll. Franklin is in four polls with his high coming in the FloWrestling Top 20.
