BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team (11-4) opens Western Athletic Conference play Saturday when the Roadrunners host Grand Canyon (6-7). Tip is set for 1 p.m.
Grand Canyon is a former CCAA rival for CSU Bakersfield. The Roadrunners lead the all-time series 13-1 after the team split a pair of games last season. The Antelopes enter league play with a 6-7 record. The WAC leaders in scoring defense, Grand Canyon gave up a season-low 44 points in last Saturday's 87-44 victory over NAIA San Diego Christian.
GCU freshman guard Jessica Gajewski was named College Sports Madness WAC Player of the Week Jan. 5. She made 10-of-17 three-point attempts in two games last week, averaging 16.0 points per game.
Tyonna Outland (R-Sr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) moved to second on the Bakersfield career scoring chart Nov. 26 when she posted 12 points against Fresno Pacific. Outland passed Amber Williams (1,538, 2009-13) to become the Division I scoring leader at CSUB and has now scored 1,726 points. She is 70 points away from the career leader at CSU Bakersfield, Katie McElree (1,796, 2002-06).
