RIVERSIDE, Calif.—No. 19 CSU Bakersfield swept a pair of matches at the Cal Baptist Lancer Mini Water Polo Tournament Saturday afternoon.
CSUB defeated No. 20 Hartwick (0-1) 8-4 in the first match. Nicola Barrett (R-So., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS) posted a hat trick to lead the 'Runners. Kristen Jensen (So., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Los Osos HS) scored twice. Niki De Leon (Jr., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS) scored a goal and made three steals. Courtney Wahlstrom (So., Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) charted five saves and three steals.
“Hartwick played an unconventional defense,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “It was tough for us to get momentum. It's good to have another win over a top 20 team.”
The Roadrunners defeated Pomona-Pitzer (0-1) 12-8. The Sagehens qualified for the 2014 NCAA Water Polo Championships and entered the match ranked first in the current CWPA Division III Top 10 poll. Freshman Ashley Paz (Upland, Calif., Upland HS) tallied a season best four goals to pace CSUB. Jensen scored twice and made a career high seven steals.
Barrett scored twice and dished out a career high five assists. Tancy Aldridge (So., Lompoc, Calif., Cabrillo HS) charted a career best three goals. Brittany Tyra (Jr., Grass Valley, Calif., Sierra College) tied her season best with 13 saves.
“We did a lot of good things in this game,” Gall said. “We had great production out of our two-meter offense. We had eight different players score during the two matches today and both of our goals played fantastic. Going 2-0 will definitely give us confidence moving forward.”
The Roadrunners (3-6) return to the pool next Saturday for a doubleheader at Fresno Pacific. CSUB faces the host Sunbirds at 10 a.m. before facing Cal State Monterey Bay at 1 p.m. CSU Bakersfield opens home action Mar. 7 against Arizona State at 1 p.m. Admission is free to the Hillman Aquatics Complex.
