CSU Bakersfield Heads To Seattle U Saturday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team travels to Seattle U Saturday. Tip is set for 4 p.m.

The Roadrunners (14-6) and the Redhawks are tied for third in the WAC with a 3-2 record. NM State (12-6) leads the league with a 5-0 mark while Texas-Pan American (11-9) sits in second with a 4-1 record. The Aggies are at the Broncs on Saturday.

Seattle U is 6-14 The Redhawks won a pair of games last week against Chicago State and UMKC. Seattle had four players; Wilma Afunugo (13.0), Kaylee Best (11.5), Taelor Ross (10.0), and Crystal Allen (10.0) average in double figures during the last week. Ross leads the team in scoring (11.1) while Afunugo is the team leader in rebounding (9.7).

This will be the 13th time in which CSU Bakersfield and Seattle U are with the Roadrunners leading the all-time series 8-4. The Redhawks won 2-of-3 against CSUB last season.

Alyssa Shannon (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) was named Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season Jan. 26. Shannon averaged 21.5 points and 5.0 assists in a 2-0 week for CSU Bakersfield. Shannon scored a career high 24 points against UMKC Jan. 22. Shannon was 5-of-10 from the field, and 3-of-5 from three-point range. Shannon posted career highs as she went 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. The 5-2 point guard scored the final seven points from the free throw line (over the final 1:13 of the game) in the 70-67 victory over the 'Roos. Shannon went 5-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc in the Roadrunners' 83-58 victory over Chicago State Jan. 25. She scored 19 points, had five assists, and four steals against the Cougars.

Junior Batabe Zempare (Accra, Ghana, Scottsdale Chapparal HS) broke the school record for career rebounds with seven at UTPA Jan. 17. Her 703 career rebounds breaks old record of 683 which was set by Heather Garay (2001-03). Zempare is the conference and team leader in rebounding entering this week with a 10.1 rpg average. The 6-2 forward has recorded seven double-doubles this season (in 17 appearances). Zempare leads all WAC players with 15 career double-doubles. Zempare also leads all WAC players with 28 10+ rebound games. Her 19 rebounds against NM State Jan. 15 are the most by any WAC player this season. Zempare leads CSUB and is second in conference in field goal shooting (.500, 69-for-138). Zempare has moved into 11th in Roadrunner history in career field goal percentage as she his shooting at a .487 clip (228-468) for her career.
