SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—Lena Mihailovic scored five goals to lead No. 5 Arizona State to a 19-6 victory over the Roadrunners in Sunday's first match. The Sun Devils jumped out a 6-1 first quarter lead and never looked back. ASU outscored the 'Runners 5-2 in the second and 6-2 in the third quarters.

Freshmen Lauren Paulson (Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) and Jada Helberg (Corona, Calif., Roosevelt HS) each scored two goals for CSUB.  Nicola Barrett (R-So., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS) and Niki De Leon (Jr., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS) both drew three exclusions. Brittany Tyra (Jr., Grass Valley, Calif., Sierra College) made nine saves.

“We came out a little flat and let ASU get a few quick goals,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “I'm excited that Lauren and Jada are getting on the scoreboard against a very good defense.”

The 'Runner tournament concluded with a 13-2 loss to No. 17 Michigan. Janelle Shelby (Sr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) and Tancy Aldridge (So., Lompoc, Calif., Cabrillo HS) had the CSUB  goals. Barrett drew three exclusions. Courtney Wahlstrom (So., Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) made seven saves and two steals.

“It was a tough way to end the tournament,” Gall said. “We had some great opportunities early in the game and when we didn't convert, we started to tighten up and force shots and passes.  We are on the right track, we have some work to do but I'm excited about what we are capable of becoming.”

The Roadrunners return to the pool next Saturday for matches against No. 20 Hartwick and Pomona-Pitzer at the Cal Baptist Mini in Riverside. CSU Bakersfield opens home action Mar. 7 against Arizona State at 1 p.m. Admission is free to the Hillman Aquatics Complex.
