SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—An 11-6 victory over No. 13 UC San Diego highlighted day two action for CSU Bakersfield at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The Roadrunners opened the match against the Tritons (0-2) by scoring the first four goals and would lead 7-3 at halftime. CSUB increased the advantage to 9-4 heading into the third before earning the first victory over a ranked opponent since Feb. 4, 2012 when the 'Runners handed the No. 17 Cal Baptist a 9-8 defeat.
Janelle Shelby posted a hat trick and has moved into sixth place on the all-time scoring chart at CSUB. Upon the conclusion of today's play, Shelby has 160 career goals. Nicola Barrett (R-So., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS) also recorded three goals with Bridgette Souza (R-Sr., La Jolla, Calif., Sonoma State) earning two goals. Courtney Wahlstrom (So., Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) made 13 saves.
“This was a great team effort,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “We started the game on a 4-0 run and beat them in each of the three quarters to lead 9-4 into the fourth. We came out with amazing intensity and energy. Courtney had an amazing game in the cage and blocked a critical (penalty shot) in the second period.
No. 11 CSUN defeated CSUB 11-8 earlier in the day. The Roadrunners went down 7-3 at half despite outscoring the Matadors 5-3 in the second; CSUB could not overcome the deficit. Shelby scored a team high three times. Shelby also added two steals in the game. Souza scored two goals. Kristen Jensen (So., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Los Osos HS) made three steals while Katie Benson (So., La Crescenta, Calif., Crescenta Valley HS) added two steals. Wahlstrom made seven saves.
“It was nice to get Janelle scoring again,” said Gall. “We outscored them 5-3 in the second half. We just needed to have a better first half. I knew we were getting better and better with each game and it's nice to come out with a victory against a ranked team.
Tournament play concludes Sunday when the Roadrunners face No. 5 Arizona State at 8 a.m. and No. 17 Michigan at 1:10 p.m. CSU Bakersfield opens home action Mar. 7 against Arizona State at 1 p.m. Admission is free to the Hillman Aquatics Complex.
