Defense Earns CSUB Road WAC Victory at Chicago St.

Box Score

CHICAGO, Illinois,- The CSUB Roadrunners went on an 8-0 run with six minutes to play in the first half Saturday building a lead they would never relinquish in a 57-41 win over Chicago State in Western Athletic Conference action.

The 'Runners used stifling defense to hold the Cougars (4-14, 0-4 WAC) to just 41 points, the fewest the Roadrunners have allowed this season to an NCAA Division I opponent. The 'Runners defense made it extremely difficult for Chicago State to get off shots as they held the Cougars to just 27% shooting from the field and 22% (4-of-22) from three-point range.

The 41 points allowed by CSUB was the fewest ever scored by a Division I opponent against the 'Runners. The previous low mark was a 61-50 win in November of 2013 over Northern Arizona.

“That was the key to the game, I thought our guys really got down in their stance and defended,” said CSUB head coach Rod Barnes. “I was proud of them because we had a lot of guys that played a lot of minutes less than 48 hours ago and bounce back; it's a great win for us.”

The Roadrunners offense was led by Tyrell Corbin (Sr., Columbia, S.C., Salt Lake City CC) who scored in double-figures for the second game straight with 13 points on 3-of-9 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line to go with his eight rebounds. Aly Ahmed (Jr., Alexandria, Egypt, Midland CC) scored 13 points as well, 10 in the second half while securing eight rebounds on a 6-of-14 night shooting from the field.

The Roadrunners trailed only once following the first score of the game by Chicago State but went on to build several small first-half leads before taking a 24-17 lead into the half. The Roadrunners briefly allowed Chicago State to cut the lead to five points with 12:51 left in the second half before going on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to build a 17 point lead.

CSUB closed on the game with consistent free throw shooting and a late three-pointer from Javonte Maynor (R-Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Georgia State) with 2:17 to play. Maynor made three second-half three pointers and finished with 11 points for the Roadrunners; he's scored in double figures in each of the last three contests.

“I'm most proud, for a guy like me to look on the board and see 41 points,” Barnes said. “I thought we had balance on offense as well, I thought Ty Corbin had his second good game in a row with double figures, I thought Javonte Maynor did what we've been expecting him to do all year, hit some shots where we needed them; I thought he made some clutch plays for us.”

Chicago State was led by 13 points from Trayvon Palmer and 10 points from Joshua Batson who hit a three-pointer with 18 second to play to cut the final deficit to 16 points.

The win was the first for CSUB over Chicago State in Chicago, it was also the 50th win for Barnes has head coach of CSUB.

The 'Runners return home for a four-game home stand starting Tuesday night as they host San Diego Christian in a non-conference matchup. The Roadrunners return to conference play Saturday host Seattle U in WAC action at the Icardo Center. Both games tip off at 7 P.M.
