SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield dropped a 20-4 decision to No. 4 California in the Roadrunners' opening match of the UCSB Winter Invitational Friday afternoon.

Cal (1-0) led 6-2 after the first quarter and shutout the 'Runners 5-0 in the second to lead by nine at halftime. Dora Antal led all scorers for the Bears with six goals. Kristen Jensen (So., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Los Osos HS) paced CSUB with a pair of goals. Bridgette Souza (R-Sr., La Jolla, Calif., Sonoma State) and Katie Benson (So., La Crescenta, Calif., Crescenta Valley HS) also scored for the Roadrunners.

Nicola Barrett (R-So., Cape Town, South Africa, Rustenburg HS) drew three exclusions while Niki De Leon (Jr., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS) drew two. Sophomore goalie Courtney Wahlstrom (Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) made five saves and two steals.

“We were able to do more on offense and create more opportunities,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “We still have a ways to go but we definitely improved from last weekend and that's what I wanted to see.”

Tournament play continues Saturday when the 'Runners (0-3) take on No. 11 CSUN at 11:10 a.m. and No. 13 UC San Diego at 5:40 p.m. The Roadrunners open home action Mar. 7 against Arizona State at 1 p.m. Admission is free to the Hillman Aquatics Complex.
