Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--CSU Bakersfield (12-4) shot a Division I school record 64.7% from three-point range as the Roadrunners opened Western Athletic Conference women's basketball action with a 90-67 victory over Grand Canyon (6-8) Saturday afternoon.
CSUB made 11-of-17 from three-point range to break old school mark of 60.9% (14-of-23) which was set against Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 11, 2010. Six different Roadrunners connected on a three-pointer, led by Alyssa Shannon (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) who had three.
“I am very proud of how our team played today,” said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. “This is how we wanted to start the conference season off.”
The 'Runners shot a season high 50% (32-of-64) from the field as the team recorded 26 assists. CSUB committed just five turnovers, tying the school record (5 vs. Cal Poly, Jan. 30, 2010) for fewest in a game at the Division I level.
The Roadrunners led 41-28 at halftime and scored nine points in the first 1:43 of the second half to help break the game open. CSUB shot over 60% at one point of the second half, taking its largest lead of the game, 77-51, with just under nine to play. The Roadrunners forced 16 Antelope turnovers turning the mistakes into 23 points (the Roadrunners held a 23-5 advantage in the category).
Tyonna Outland (R-Sr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) recorded her 25th career 20+ scoring game (the most of any active WAC player) as she posted 20 points. The 5-9 wing added four rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block. Shannon scored 13 points and tied her career high with nine assists. Batabe Zempare (Jr., Accra, Ghana, Scottsdale Chapparal HS) charted her sixth double-double of the year with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Zempare lead the WAC in double-doubles and this was the 14th double-double of her career, the most of any WAC player.
“If we continue to run our offense, we are going to get the open looks and put our self in a position to knock those shots down, McCall said.”
Jessica Gajewski led the Antelopes with 14 points. Gajewski, who had 10 three-pointers in 17 attempts in games last week, was limited by CSUB to two on the day. Tori Morris was 5-of-6 off the bench for 10 points for GCU.
The Roadrunners travel to New Mexico State Thursday in CSUB's first WAC road game of the year. Tip is set for 7 p.m. (MST). The Roadrunners return home Jan. 22 when CSUB hosts Missouri-Kansas City at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at vallitix.com.
