'Runners Close Regular Season With 1-0 Loss To UMKC

Box Score

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Roadrunner softball team ended its regular season with a game against Kansas City on Saturday. Despite being outhit, the Kangaroos picked up a 1-0 win.

The 'Runners had a great scoring chance in the top of the second as Bakersfield loaded the bases with oneout, but Kansas City's starting pitcher, Katie Kelley, stranded all three runners and kept the game scoreless. Bakersfield would strand Ashley Carter (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Tehachapi HS) at third in the fourth inning after a double to the gap. The lost opportunity added another to the eight left on base for the 'Runners on Saturday.

UMKC finally broke up Kelsie Monroe's (Jr., Los Banos, Calif., San Joaquin Delta) no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth when Aly Zembruski recorded an infield single. Before the hit, Monroe had only allowed three 'Roos to reach base safely and the junior pitcher returned to form with a strikeout of the next batter to end the inning.

A leadoff double by Alexandra Friloux in the bottom of the seventh inning got the 'Runners in trouble. UMKC put together a nice show of small ball, bunting Friloux over to third and setting up a scoring opportunity. Although Monroe would strikeout the next batter for out two, Zembruski delivered a walk-off single for the 1-0 win.

Monroe finished the day with a strong performance, pitching 6.2 innings while allowing only four hits and striking out six Kangaroos. Despite outhitting UMKC six to four, the Bakersfield hits were scattered with just a single hit coming in four different innings.

Bakersfield (15-38-1, 4-11 WAC) will have a week and a half off before heading to Seattle for the 2014 WAC Tournament. The 'Runners will be the fifth seed in the bracket and they will face off against a Utah Valley team that swept Bakersfield at home in March. The double elimination tournament will begin on Thursday, May 8, and will be hosted by Seattle U.
