LOS ANGELES, Calif.--No. 3 USC defeated Bakersfield 22-3 in the consolation round of the MPSF Water Polo Tournament Saturday.
The Women of Troy led 7-0 after the first quarter, scoring on 3-of-5 power play opportunities. USC took a 12-0 lead into halftime. The Roadrunners did not help their own cause by committing six offensive fouls in the first half, four of which led to Women of Troy goals.
Stephania Haralabidis scored six goals to pace USC. Jayde Appel had four with six other players scoring twice.
Niki De Leon (So., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS), Janelle Shelby (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS), and Bridgette Souza (R-Jr., La Jolla, Calif., Sonoma State) scored the 'Runner goals.
Courtney Wahlstrom (Fr., Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) made six saves. Wahlstrom made 310 saves for the year, the most in the MPSF, and fourth most in a season by a Roadrunner goalie.
"USC is a great team, so it's tough to end the year this way," said Bakersfield head coach Jason Gall. "For a team that had more first year players than returners, I though we did a nice job this year getting everyone on the same page. We had some positive results near the end of the year. Our three graduating seniors, Paige (Tsuruda), Taylor (Hanson), and Chiyeko (Morisaki) will be missed and I'm thankful for their four years in our program."
The Roadrunners conclude the 2014 season with a 12-22 record. USC (23-3) advances to the fifth place match against San Jose State.
