BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--No. 2 UCLA defeated Bakersfield 12-3 in the quarterfinals of the MPSF Water Polo Tournament Friday at USC.
Taylor Hanson (Sr., Modesto, Calif., Johansen HS) posted two of the three Bakersfield goals on penalty shots against the Bruins. Janelle Shelby (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) had the other CSUB goal. Freshman goalie Courtney Wahlstrom (Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) made 17 saves. Wahlstrom also made three steals.
"We made some really good defensive decisions today," said Bakersfield head coach Jason Gall. "Unfortunately there were a few times when one player was out of position and it cost us. Courtney (Wahlstrom) had a great game and a lot of that had to do with our team defense. We have to shoot if we want to score. We passed up too many scoring opportunities throughout the game."
Bakersfield will play No. 3 USC or No. 4 Arizona State in the consolation round Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
