SANTA MONICA, Calif.--The Bakersfield No. 2 sand volleyball team of Mariah Alvidrez and Shayna Guitare reached the semifinals of the Pac-12 Invitational's Pair Tournament as the Roadrunners concluded the 2014 regular season Sunday afternoon.
In the round of 16, Alvidrez and Guitare defeated USC's No. 3 team of Sam Hirschmann and Natasa Siljkovic 21-15, 21-13. In the quarterfinals, Alvidrez and Guitare defeated Arizona's Madison Witt and McKenna Witt 21-16, 22-24, 15-10. The Witt sisters are the Wildcats No. 1 team. Alvidrez and Guitare's run was ended by the Arizona's' No. 2 team of Madi Kingdon and Ronni Lewis who defeated the 'Runner pair in straight sets. Kingdon and Lewis would lose to USC's No. 1 team, Kirby Burnham and Sara Hughes in the finals by a straight set count.
Bakersfield's No. 1 team, Molly O'Hagan and Debora Araujo made it to the quarterfinals before losing to Kingdon and Lewis in straight sets. The Roadrunners No. 4 pair of Sydney Haynes and Danika Youngblood were 2-1, making it to the round of 16.
The 20-team pairs tournament was comprised of teams from Arizona, Arizona State, Bakersfield, and USC.
