'Runners Fall To Harvard 8-2 At CSUN Tourney

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-- The Roadrunners returned to action in the CSUN Tournament with a 8-2 loss to Harvard on Saturday. Bakersfield bested the Crimson on Friday with a 2-1, walkoff, extra inning win, but could not keep that momentum rolling into Saturday's game.

The 'Runners opened the game with a quick run for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Karissa Veiga (Sr., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) led off the game with her third hit of the tournament on a single through the left side. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Veiga scored off of Madison Bundy's (Jr., Anacortes, Wash., Oregon State) double to the gap.

Harvard answered back with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the score and then broke open a two-run lead in the third. After hitting a batter, Bakersfield's starting pitcher, Kelsie Monroe (Jr., Los Banos, Calif., San Joaquin Delta College), gave up a two-run home run to Kasey Lange. Harvard took a 3-1 lead on the shot, but Monroe rebounded well with two consecutive outs to end the inning.

Bundy remained hot with her second hit of the game to open the top of the fourth inning. The infield single was followed up by a sacrifice bunt to move the third baseman into scoring position, but the 'Runners were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Bundy would be stranded at third after a groundout and a strikeout.

Harvard added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. The 'Runners loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth thanks to three walks. Amy Ricciardi (Sr., Chino Hills, Calif., Ayala HS) plated a run with a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 5-2, but the 'Runners stranded two to end the inning.

Harvard added three runs in the bottom of the sixth with two coming from Lange's second home run of the game. She finished the game with three hits and four RBI. Although Veiga would record her third hit in the top of the seventh, the 'Runners were unable to mount a comeback and fell by a score of 8-2.

Veiga finished the day three for three with a run scored while Bundy went two for three with an RBI. Bakersfield (8-23) will conclude the Cal State Northridge Tournament on Sunday with a game against Pacific at nine a.m. and a rematch with the hosts at two p.m.
