TEMPE, Ariz.--The Bakersfield water polo (11-15, 0-2 MPSF) team split a pair of matches on day two of the Arizona State Invitational Saturday.

The Roadrunners dropped the opener to the host, No. 5 Arizona State, 14-3. Bridgette Souza (R-Jr., La Jolla, Calif., Sonoma State) scored twice while Janelle Shelby (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) had the other 'Runner tally. Niki De Leon (So., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS) drew three exclusions.

"We had some good shots that just missed," said Bakersfield head coach Jason Gall. "We made a few defensive mistakes that shouldn't have happened."

Souza scored the gamewinning goal with two minutes remaining in overtime as the Roadrunners defeated Azusa Pacific 10-9 in the nightcap. De Leon registered a hat trick and three steals to pace Bakersfield. Paige Tsuruda (Sr., Honolulu, Hawai'i, Word of Life Academy) and Kristen Jensen (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Los Osos HS) each scored twice. Jensen also had five steals. Courtney Wahlstrom (Fr., Palm Desert, Palm Desert HS) made 11 saves.

"It was great to grind out the win," Gall said. "We got into some foul trouble but we managed to get the stops when we need them."

CSUB concludes the tournament Sunday when the 'Runners take on Whittier at 8:30 a.m. and Marist at 1 p.m.
