THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.--Senior Paige Tsuruda (Sr., Honolulu, Hawai'i, Word of Life Academy) scored nine goals in two matches on Saturday as the Bakersfield water polo team finished the Cal Lutheran Posada Inviational with a 4-0 record.
The Roadrunners defeated the host, Cal Lutheran, 12-8 to begin Saturday's action.Tsuruda scored a career high five goals to pace the 'Runners. Janelle Shelby (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) recorded a hat trick. Caitlyn Hill (Jr., Porterville, Calif., Porterville HS) scord twice.
Niki De Leon (So., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS) had a goal, four assists, and drew four exclusions. Bridgette Souza (R-Jr., La Jolla, Calif., Sonoma State) scored one goal and made four steals.
In the final match of the tournament for Bakersfield, Tsuruda posted four goals to lead the Roadrunners to a 15-4 victory over La Verne. De Leon had three while Chloe Cassatt (Fr., Whittier, Calif., California HS) scored twice. Shelby made three steals while freshman goalie Courtney Wahlstrom (Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) made 13 saves.
Cal Lutheran is tied for fifth with Occidental in the Division III poll while La Verne is eighth.
"It's always great to go 4-0 on a weekend," said Bakersfield head Jason Gall. "We were able to work on some things and hopefully go into conference play with some confidence about what we can do."
The Roadrunners open MPSF play Friday when CSUB travels to No. 1 USC. The match begins at 5 p.m.
