Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Bakersfield led from start to finish as the Roadrunners defeated Grand Canyon 77-70 in Western Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The Roadrunners scored the game's first basket 32 seconds into the contest on a Batabe Zempare (So., Accra, Ghana, Scottsdale Chapparal HS) tip-in and never looked back. Bakersfield led by as much as 16 in the first half before taking 41-34 lead into halftime. The Antelopes closed to within two on three different occasions in the second half, but each time, Bakersfield would push the advantage up in their favor.
Tyonna Outland (R-Jr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) charted her second consecutive double-double as she scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Melissa Sweat (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Southern Oregon) tallied 14 points and nine rebounds. Alyssa Shannon (So. Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) scored 12 points, dished out a career high nine assists, and had three rebounds. Dajy Vines (R-Jr., Oxnard, Calif., Santa Clara HS) sank four three-pointers for 12 points.
Despite giving up a size advantage to Grand Canyon (16-7, 5-5 WAC), the Roadrunners outrebounded the 'Lopes 38-29, 16-9 on the offensive glass. CSUB had 10 steals and scored 15 points off of Antelope turnovers.
Bakersfield, which is in second place in the WAC (13-8, 7-2 WAC), travels to first place Idaho Thursday for a 7 p.m. tip.
