THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.--Bakersfield won twice on the first day of the Cal Lutheran Posada Invitational Friday.

Bakersfield defeated Villanova 16-10 in the morning session. Three players; Paige Tsuruda (Sr., Honolulu, Hawai'i, Word of Life Academy), Janelle Shelby (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS), and Kristin Jensen (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Los Osos HS) scored four goals. Bridgette Souza (R-Jr., La Jolla, Calif., Sonoma State) had two goals and four steals. Tsuruda posted three steals.

Niki De Leon (So., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS) had three assists. Freshman goalie Courtney Wahlstrom (Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) made 14 saves.

The Roadrunners defeated Pomona-Pitzer 13-12 in Friday's second match. Pomona-Pitzer is ranked third in the current Division III poll. With the score tied at seven at halftime, the difference proved to be the third quarter in which the 'Runners outscored the Sagehens 5-3.

Shelby and De Leon both scored four goals. Souza had a hat trick and three assists. Wahlstrom made seven saves.

"We got the wins, but our defense needs to improve," said Bakersfield head coach Jason Gall. "We need to be better at closing games out in the fourth quarter. We need to be more consistent on both sides of the ball. Niki had a great game this afternoo and Janelle did a nice job in both games creating opportunities for herself."

The tournament continues Saturday with matches against Cal Lutheran at 8 a.m. and La Verne at 11:45 a.m.
