Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Shaquille Hines banked a three-pointer off the glass from the top of the key with 18 seconds left to send the Bakersfield Roadrunners (12-16, 5-9 WAC) to their second-consecutive Western Athletic Conference loss 63-61 Thursday night to UT Pan American (9-20, 5-9 WAC) at Rabobank Arena.
The three was Hines' first of the night as he led the UTPA Broncs with a game-high 18 points while UTPA held Bakersfield without a field goal over the final 4:08 of play to send them to the loss. CSUB had taken the lead with 28 seconds remaining following a pair of Issiah Grayson (R-Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Southern Idaho CC) free throws. Both teams struggled from the field in the final four minutes as UTPA went 4:36 without a field goal before Hines' game-winner.
Bakersfield had two more chances, the first was a missed Aly Ahmed (So., Alexandria, Egypt, Midlands CC) short jumper in traffic with nine seconds remaining, the second came after a made free throw from UTPA's Shaquille Boga with 1.1 seconds left. Stefon Johnson's (R-Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio, Gardner-Webb) full court pass found Brandon Barnes (R-Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Lipscomb) at the baseline but his jumper fell short as time expired.
It's the Roadrunners fifth-loss in conference play by five or fewer points.
Bakersfield struggled in the first half shooting just 9-of-30 from the field for 30-percent and just 2-of-8 from three-point range while also turning the ball over nine times while UTPA built an 18-point lead. CSUB would come out in the second half, chipping away at the lead before finally taking just their second lead of the game with 10:20 to play. The lead would change hands twice more, the final time coming on Hines' game-winner.
“We didn't come out and get after those guys like it was the next-to-last game at home, said head coach Rod Barnes. “In the second half I got them going in the right direction; we had our opportunities, with four minutes to go we had our opportunities to make baskets, to get shots and we just didn't get it done.”
Bakersfield shot 14-of-25 from the field in the second half good for 56-percent and 5-of-10 from three-point range sparked by a team-high 15 points from Javonte Maynor (R-Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Georgia State) who was 4-of-6 from the three in the second half. Grayson added 12 points on 3-of-6 from the field while Barnes chipped in with 11 points on 5-of-9 from the field. CSUB however committed nine more second-half turnovers including five that came in the final 4:08 of play, following Bakersfield's last field goal.
The 'Runners will return to action Saturday night for their final home game of the 2014 season hosting second-place New Mexico State at Rabobank Arena. The Aggies lost in overtime Thursday night at Utah Valley 66-61.
Tipoff is schedule for 7 P.M.; it's also senior night where CSUB will honor six outgoing seniors, all of which will be graduating this spring. It's also homecoming for CSU Bakersfield as well.
