NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--Bakersfield lost both of its matches on the final day of the UC Irvine Invitational Sunday at Corona Del Mar High School.
No. 14 UC Davis defeated Bakersfield 13-12 in the first match of the day. The Roadrunners had a 6-on-5 opportunity in the last minute of the fourth quarter, but could not take advantage of the opportunity to tie the match.
Kristen Jensen (Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Los Osos HS) scored four goals. Janelle Shelby (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) had a hat trick. Niki De Leon (So., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS) drew seven exclusions and scored a goal. Paige Tsuruda (Sr., Honolulu, Hawai'i, Word of Life Academy) drew four exclusions and had two goals.
"We played hard and gave ourselves an opportunity to tie or win the game," said Bakersfield head coach Jason Gall.
The Roadrunners lost 13-3 to Pacific in the 15th place match. Bridgette Souza (R-Jr., La Jolla, Calif., Sonoma State) scored twice for the 'Runners. De Leon drew four exclusions. Courtney Wahlstrom (Fr., Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) made 11 saves.
"It was a tough way to end the weekend," said Gall. "We are really young and with only 10 athletes suited up this weekend, I feel pretty good about some of the things we are able to take away from this tournament. These games will pay off for us down the road."
The Roadrunners (5-13) return to the pool next weekend at the Cal Lutheran Invitational.
