Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. - The Bakersfield Roadrunners saw their three-game Western Athletic Conference winning streak snapped as Chicago State held off CSUB 73-68 Saturday afternoon at the Jones Convocation Center.
Bakersfield (12-15, 5-8 WAC) only led once in the game following the first basket, trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, tied it once in the second half but could never get past the Cougars physical defensive pressure which caused 19 CSUB turnovers leading to 20 points for Chicago State who snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.
The Roadrunners were led by Issiah Grayson's (R-Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Southern Idaho CC) 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 3-of-5 from three-point range. Grayson scored 12 of Bakersfield's 15 points during a three-minute span early in the second half to tie the game at 53-53 with 12:41 to play.
Chicago State (11-15, 5-8 WAC) would retake the lead following five-straight points from Clarke Rosenberg but would let CSUB pull within one point on three occasions, the final coming with 1:03 to go following a Grayson layup.
The Cougars took a three-point lead following a Matt Ross layup with 31 seconds left, then the Roadrunners missed their chance at forcing overtime when a Javonte Maynor (R-Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Georgia State) three-point-attempt was short from the right elbow.
Maynor and Brandon Barnes (R-Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Lipscomb) each added 11 for Bakersfield but CSUB again struggled with the turnover with 19 to just seven assists. CSUB also had 13 offensive rebounds but only three second-chance points in the game. The 'Runners were 23-of-51 from the field but Chicago State was able to convert 26-of-50 shots in the game good for 52% and 9-of-21 from three-point range.
