DAVIS, Calif.--For the second consecutive day, the Bakersfield water polo team split a pair of matches at the UC Davis Tournament.
No. 14 UC Davis defeated the Roadrunners 10-6 in the morning session. The 'Runners took an early 3-0 lead before the Aggies tied the score as the first quarter came to a close. The difference proved to be in the second and third where UC Davis outscored Bakersfield 7-2.
Janelle Shelby (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) scored twice to pace the 'Runners. Niki De Leon (So., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS) drew five ejections. For the third straight match, freshman goalie Courtney Wahlstrom (Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) recorded double-digit saves as she had 13.
"We started off strong," said Bakersfield head coach Jason Gall. "We need to start to convert on offense."
Jensen scored six of the seven Roadrunner goals including the gamewinner with 14 seconds to go as Bakersfield defeated Cal State East Bay 7-6 in the final tournament match. The Pioneers nearly sent the game into overtime as Sara Hudyn backhanded a shot at the final buzzer that barred out.
De Leon had three assists and drew three ejections. Wahlstrom made 17 saves.
"We are starting to dial things in defensively," Gall said. "We played four games in less than 24 hours, so to grind out this win was good for us."
The Roadrunners are entered in the UC Irvine Invitational next weekend. The 'Runners open tournament play against No. 1 USC on Saturday at UCI beginning at 8 a.m.
