FRESNO, Calif. -- Bakersfield completed day two of the Fresno State Kickoff Classic with losses to both Sacramento State and UC Santa Barbara.

Bakersfield dropped the first game of the day to Sacramento State by a score of 11-6.

The 'Runners got off to a rough start as three errors in the top of the second inning helped lead to five runs for the Hornets. Sacramento State tacked on another run in the third to extend their lead to 6-0, but Bakersfield cut the lead in half later in the inning.

Freshman Kayli Shaw (Rocklin, Calif., Whitney HS) got things started with a single to center and would eventually score after Karsyn Guzman (Fr., Hanford, Calif., Hanford HS) and Karissa Veiga (Sr., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) reached base safely. Amy Ricciardi (Sr., Chino Hills, Calif., Ayala HS) then doubled home Guzman and Veiga to record her team-leading seventh and eighth RBI of the season and to bring the score to 6-3.

Sacramento State extended their lead to 8-3 in the fifth inning thanks to two singles and a triple. The 'Runners tried to answer right back, loading the bases on two singles and a walk in the bottom half of the fifth. Three groundouts would limit the 'Runners to only one run, but cut the deficit to four.

The Hornets extended their lead by three in the seventh after loading the bases, making the score 11-4. Bakersfield began a comeback in the bottom of the seventh and started scoring on a two-out rally. With Kara Frankhouser (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) and Madison Bundy (Jr., Anacortes, Wash., Oregon State) on base, Ashley Carter (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Tehachapi HS) singled home Bundy to make the score 11-5. Frankhouser would eventually score when Kayli Shaw reached on an error, cutting the deficit to five, but the 'Runners were unable to complete the comback.

Veiga, Shaw and Ricciardi all recorded multiple hits in game one for Bakersfield.

Game two of the day saw the 'Runners losing to UC Santa Barbara 6-0.

Freshman pitcher Lyndsay Klimenko (Half Moon Bay, Calif., Half Moon Bay HS) got the start for the 'Runners and got in a jam early on. With the bases loaded in the first inning, Klimenko induced a pop up and a groundout to end the inning unscathed.

The Gauchos struck first with a two-run homer in the second inning by the centerfielder, Stacy Cavazos. Karissa Veiga tried to answer back in the top of the third inning as she got her fourth hit of the day on a triple to right field. Veiga was cut down at the plate on a squeeze play and the 'Runners would not score in the inning, continuing to trail 2-0.

UCSB doubled its lead in the third inning and tacked on another run in the fourth to make the score 5-0. A final run in the sixth would give the Gauchos the 6-0 lead to which they held on to for the win.

Amy Ricciardi continued her strong day, adding two more hits to bring her total on the day to four hits and two RBI. Karissa Veiga ended the day going 4-7 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Bakersfield will finish off the Fresno State Kickoff Classic with a game against the host Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Live stats for that game are available as before at this link.
