LOGAN, Utah, - The CSUB Roadrunners will compete in the World Vision Classic Thursday through Saturday hosted by Utah State. The round-robin tournament also includes games against South Dakota State and Idaho State.
The 'Runners enter on the heels of a four-game losing streak although all of CSUB's eight losses this season have come by a total of just 11 points. The 'Runners have dropped four games by two or fewer points as well.
CSUB is led by Aly Ahmed (Jr., Alexandria, Egypt, Midland CC) who is averaging 14 ppg for the Roadrunners after scoring 18 at Portland State on Saturday in CSUB's 65-59 loss. Ahmed scored 16 of his game-high 18 in the second half and also ranks in the top-five in the Western Athletic Conference scoring.
Kevin Mays (Jr., Queens, N.Y., Odessa CC) leads the Roadrunners on the glass while also leading the Western Athletic Conference in rebounding at 9.7 rpg. He also leads the WAC in offensive rebounds as well, pulling down nearly five per contest.
CSUB will face Utah State Thursday to open the tournament. The Aggies are 4-4 this season and recently snapped a four-game losing streak with a 50-47 win at Utah Valley on Saturday. Jalen Moore who leads Utah State with 15 ppg scored 14 points in the win.
CSUB last played Utah State in the opening round of the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament with CSUB losing 75-69 in Logan.
Thursday's game can be heard live on Newstalk 1180 and 96.1 FM KERN, beginning at 6:30 P.M.
CSUB will face South Dakota State on Friday. The Jackrabbits enter as the hottest team in the World Vision Classic with a four-game winning streak which included a 20-point win over WAC member Missouri-Kansas City. The Jackrabbits and Roadrunners are meeting for the first time on a neutral court, CSUB won the last meeting in 2013 79-78 in Bakersfield.
South Dakota State is led by guard Deondre Parks who's averaging nearly 16 ppg for the Jackrabbits while forward Cody Larsen averages nearly 14 per contest as well.
Friday's game can be heard on SmartTalk 1230 KGEO beginning at 4 P.M.
The 'Runners close out the tournament against Idaho State. CSUB swept the series with the Bengals last season and is 5-0 all-time against Idaho State. The Bengals have won three of their last four games including a 67-51 road win over Grand Canyon last week. Idaho State is led by Chris Hansen who's averaging nearly 18 points and over three assists per game.
