BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--The Bakersfield women's basketball team hosts a pair of schools from Fresno this week.
On Wednesday night, the 'Runners host Fresno Pacific at 7 p.m. Wednesday's game will be an exhibition for Fresno Pacific, but it will count in the overall standings for Bakersfield. The Roadrunners defeated the Sunbirds 81-49 Dec. 30, 2013 to take a 2-0 all-time series lead.
Bakersfield has defeated Fresno Pacific in exhibition games during the 2004-05, 2006-07, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons.
The Sunbirds are 0-4 after losing a pair of games to Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State East Bay last weekend. FPU hasn't scored more than 48 points in any of their four games this season. Charde Stevens leads the team in scoring (10.3 ppg).
CSUB hosts Fresno State Sunday afternoon. The tip is set for 12 p.m. Bakersfield playing Fresno State for the seventh time at the Division I level. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 6-0.
Fresno State is 2-1 after losing 68-50 to USC on Sunday. The Bulldogs travel to the University of San Diego on Friday before heading to Bakersfield. Three players are averaging in double figures for the Bulldogs, led by Taylor Thompson at 14.3 per game. Bree Farley is averaging 13.6 points per game. Alex Sheedy is averaging 12.7 points per game is second on the team in rebounding (6.1).
Tyonna Outland (R-Sr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) was named Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Nov. 17 through Nov. 23. Outland led the Roadrunners to a 76-72 win at Pac-12 Arizona, scoring 25 points and hitting four free throws in the final 12 seconds to clinch the win. She followed that up with nine points and seven rebounds at Arizona State. Outland was also selected WAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness for her performances during that week.
The 5-9 wing moved to third on the Bakersfield career scoring chart Nov. 14 when she posted 28 points against Air Force. Outland passed Kelley Tarver (1,481, 2005-10) for third and has now scored 1,529 points in her career. She is nine away from second place Amber Williams (1,538, 2009-13) and is 267 points away from the career leader at CSUB, Katie McElree (1,796, 2002-06). As a result of her performance against Air Force, she was selected College Sports Madness WAC Player of the Week.
