Late Lead Slips As Bakersfield Falls To Kansas City

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.,- Frank Williams Jr. hit a three pointer from the corner with 2.2 seconds to play to complete a five-point comeback in the last 1:24 for Kansas City as the 'Roos sent CSUB to their third-straight WAC loss 70-69 Saturday night at the Icardo Center.

As has been the repeating story for the Roadrunners (8-12, 1-5 WAC), Bakersfield failed to close out a lead with four minutes to play, going 3:05 without a field goal, turning the ball over twice while allowing an open look for the game-winning basket.

“We played with a whole lot more energy, more fire, I thought we played together better than we did in the last couple of games but the disappointing part is we didn't do enough to close it,” said head coach Rod Barnes. “It's always crucial at the end of the game that you gotta make plays.”

Bakersfield led by five points following a Zach Lamb (R-Sr., Norcross, Ga., Miami-Dade CC) jumper with 3:20 to play. Brandon Barnes then stole the ball at midcourt but missed an open dunk before a missed-three point attempt from Issiah Grayson (R-Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Southern Idaho CC) following an offensive rebound.  Williams then cut the Bakersfield lead to three points on the next possession. Bakersfield stretched the lead to five following a pair of Grayson free throws with 1:24 left.

Kansas City (7-12, 4-3 WAC) however came back with a Nelson Kirksey three pointer with 1:18 left before a Grayson turnover led to a Martez Harrison layup and a tie game with :47 to play. Bakersfield would take the lead on a Barnes baseline layup with 14 seconds left before Williams delivered the game-winner for the 'Roos who sent Bakersfield to their fourth conference home loss.

“With the couple of turnovers we had I thought we were aggressive with it and a couple of missed shots there were right at the basket and that kind of made it tough for us,” Barnes said. “We just didn't do enough to get it done.”

The final four minutes overshadowed a balanced offensive night for the Roadrunners who had four players in double figures led by Javonte Maynor (R-Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Georgia State) and Grayson who had 16 points apiece. Aly Ahmed (So., Alexandria, Egypt, Midland CC) recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Barnes also added 12 for Bakersfield in the loss.

Kansas City, coming off their worst-offensive game of the season Thursday night at Utah Valley, made 15-of-28 field-goal-attempts in the second half, good for 53.6%. Harrison, the WAC's leading freshman scorer led the 'Roos with 19 points on 6-of-12 from the field.

Bakersfield will head out on the road for their next three WAC games starting Thursday night at New Mexico State. The Aggies are coming off a 90-78 win over UT Pan American Thursday night. Bakersfield will also see UTPA on their road trip next week.
