SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--The Bakersfield water polo team split at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational on Saturday.
With the score tied at six in the fourth quarter, Cal Bapitst recorded one more tally as the Lancers defeated the Roadrunners 8-7 in the opener. Freshman Kristen Jensen (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Los Osos HS) scored three times and three steals to lead the 'Runners. Janelle Shelby (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) had two goals.
Niki De Leon (So., Montebello, Calif., Montebello HS) scored a goal and drew five ejections. Caitlyn Hill (Jr., Porterville, Calif., Porterville HS) also scored for CSUB. Courtney Wahlstrom (Fr., Palm Desert, Calif., Palm Desert HS) made nine saves.
"I was pleased with the effort and although we gave up a few too many goals, there is a definite improved understanding of what we are trying to accomplish," said Bakersfield head coach Jason Gall. "Our offensive six-on-five needs to improve if we want to start winning these games."
The Roadrunners defeated Concordia-Irvine 12-8 to conclude day one for Bakersfield at the tournament. Jensen earned her second consecutive hat trick. Shelby and Paige Tsuruda (Sr., Honolulu, Hawai'i, Word of Life Academy) each scored twice.
"Eight of the nine field players that got in the scoring column, so that is very encouraging to see that kind of balance," Gall said.
Bakersfield plays No. 10 Long Beach State (9:10 a.m.) and No. 14 UC San Diego (1:50 p.m.) to finish tournament play Sunday.
