Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz.--Bakersfield could not overcome a poor shooting first half as Grand Canyon defeated the Roadrunners 78-64 in Western Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday night.
Bakersfield (7-7, 1-1 WAC) was limited to six field goals in 37 attempts (16.2%) in the first half as the Antelopes took a 42-22 halftime lead. The 'Lopes (12-4, 1-2 WAC) would lead by as much as 22 in the second half before a CSUB rally cut the lead to 10 (67-57) with six minutes to play. That would be as close as the Roadrunners would get down the stretch as the 'Runners could only post two field goals in the final six minutes.
For the game, The Antelopes shot 43 percent from the field, 39 percent from three-point range and 86 percent from the free throw line on the game. Bakersfield connected on 31 percent from the floor, 28 percent from downtown and 68 percent from the line. GCU edged the Roadrunners on the boards, 45-43.
Tyonna Outland (R-Jr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) paced Bakersfield with 19 points, while Alyssa Shannon (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) had 15 and Melissa Sweat (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Southern Oregon) added 14. Batabe Zempare (So., Accra, Ghana, Scottsdale Chapparal HS) grabbed a game-high 12 boards, while Shannon nabbed a game-high four steals. Grand Canyon's Kaitlyn Petersen led all players with 25 points.
Bakersfield returns home for the first time in league play next Thursday when the 'Runners host Seattle U (7-9, 2-1 WAC) at 7 p.m.
