BERKELEY, Calif.--No. 9 San Jose State (12-11) ended the Bakersfield water polo season when the Spartans defeated the Roadrunners 14-7 in the loser's bracket of the MPSF Tournament Saturday.
The Spartans led 6-3 at half before outscoring the Roadrunners 8-4 in the second half. Seven different Bakersfield players scored. Alex Bayer (So., Alta Loma, Calif., Los Osos HS) made 10 saves.
The Roadrunners finish the program's first season in the MPSF with a 12-24 record. All 24 CSUB losses were to teams ranked in the CWPA Division I Top 20.
"I'm very proud of this group," said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. "We were ready to play our best game of the season and in many ways we did. The first in the MPSF has given us a new standard in which we want to get in the coming years. We played every team in the national top five this season and I know we earned their respect. I'm thankful for the four years that our seniors have given to our program."
