BERKELEY, Calif.--The Bakersfield water polo team fell 21-5 to No. 2 USC in the first round of the MPSF Tournament Friday.
The Women of Troy led 4-2 after the first period as Janelle Shelby (So., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) scored both Roadrunner goals. USC scored the first three goals of the second period before Sam Shead (Sr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) scored from the 6m line to make it 7-3. Jessica Browning (Sr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS) converted a penalty shot which was drawn by Paige Tsuruda (Jr., Honolulu, Hawai'i, Word of Life Academy with 4:34 to go in the second frame to cut the Women of Troy lead to three.
That would be as close as Bakersfield would get as USC scored on the ensuing two possessions to take a 9-4 lead into halftime. The Women of Troy scored five times in the third quarter. Amanda Nesbit (Sr., Chino Hills, Calif., Chino Hills HS) posted a 6-on-5 goal with 32 seconds to go in the third quarter for the lone CSUB tally of the period. USC added seven more in the fourth to make it the final 21-5.
"It was a huge improvement from the last time we played USC," said Bakersfield head coach Jason Gall. "We came out with good intensity and were aggressive shooting the ball. We need to carry this over to tomorrow."
The Roadrunners take on San Jose State (the No. 6 seed) Saturday at 11 a.m.
