NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--The CSU Bakersfield water polo team fell to No. 1 Stanford and No. 9 San Jose State on day one of the UCI Invitational. CSU Bakersfield dropped a 12-4 decision to Stanford in the first match Saturday morning.
Jessica Browning (Sr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS), Taylor Hanson (Jr.,
Modesto, Calif., Johansen HS), Janelle Shelby (So., San Diego, Calif.,
Grossmont HS), and Nicola Barrett (Fr., Cape Town, South Africa,
Rustenburg HS) each scored a goal for CSUB. Shelby drew three ejections.
Alex Bayer (So., Alta Loma, Calif., Los Osos HS) made nine saves.
"Dispite the score, this was one of our most competitive games of the year," said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. "We had some great saves from Alex, good steals from our field players, and we did a good job of controlling and protecting the ball on offense."
The final pool play match saw CSUB drop a 13-6 decision to No. 9 San Jose State. Barrett scored twice for the Roadrunners. Also scoring goals were Shelby, Amanda Nesbit (Sr., Chino Hills, Calif., Chino Hills HS),
Caitlyn Hill (So., Porterville, Calif., Porterville HS), and Sam Shead (Sr., Johannesburg, South Africa (Rand Park HS). Shead drew four ejections. Bayer made four saves.
"We took a total of 24 shots and drew 12 ejections," Gall said. "We have to put our shots away."
CSUB will continue to play on Sunday at Corona Del Mar HS in the consolation bracket. First up is a 10:30 a.m. match against either No. 15 Cal State Northridge or No. 16 Loyola Marymount .
