PALO ALTO, Calif. —Sophomore pitcher Kelsie Monroe (Los Banos, Calif., Delta College) threw a complete-game shutout, holding UC Davis to three hits and striking out six to help the CSU Bakersfield softball team post its first win of the season at the Stanford Nike Invitational on Saturday. Earlier in the day, CSUB lost to No. 22 Stanford 12-0.
The victory was also Monroe's first as a 'Runner. Sophomore third baseman Madison Bundy (Anacortes, Wash., Oregon State) drove in both of the runs for CSUB as she hit a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the win.
"That was a tough loss against Stanford. We were hititng the ball, but it was right at people and we just couldn't that break through," said CSUB head coach Crissy Buck. "I think it showed what kind of character we have as a team that we were able to come back and play well against UC Davis and get that win."
After three scoreless innings, CSUB junior shortstop Shay Fryer (San Diego, Calif., University HS) smashed a triple and then came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Bundy to put the 'Runners up 1-0 over the Aggies (4-4).
CSUB (1-6) added an insurance run in the sixth inning when freshman designated player Jessica Castaneda (Bakersfield, Calif., Ridgeview HS) reached base on an error. Jazmine Irvin (Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) pinch ran for Castaneda and was advanced to second base on a bunt by Fryer. Bundy then singled up the middle and Irvin was able to come all the way home on a fielding error by the Aggies.
In CSUB's first game on Saturday, Stanford (9-2) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. Freshman pitcher Amber Mills (Fresno, Calif., Clovis West HS) entered the game in relief and shut down the Cardinal for the next three innings before they put up six more runs to end the game in the fifth inning.
CSUB was hindered by two errors that led to four unearned runs. Sophomore second baseman Adrianna Cardoza (Santa Anna, Calif., La Quinta HS) accounted for two of the 'Runners' three hits while Bundy posted the other with a double.
The 'Runners will play their final game of the Stanford Nike Invitational on Sunday at 10 a.m. against Cal State Northridge. The Matadors edged CSUB 2-1 on Friday in the opening day of the tournament.
