Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz.—New Mexico State (22-10) defeated Bakersfield (21-12) 3-0 in the finals of the Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament Wednesday on the campus of Grand Canyon University.
The Aggies opened the match by scoring the first five points and ended the set on a 11-1 spurt, defeating the 'Runners 25-9. New Mexico State committed just two hitting errors (10-2-40) as the Aggies held the 'Runners to -.067 (7-9-30) hitting during the same span.
The New Mexico State onslaught continued in the second set as the Aggies opened the frame by scoring 12 of the first 13 points. New Mexico State held the 'Runners to negative hitting again (-.029) in the second set. CSUB had more hitting errors (18) than kills (15) entering the halftime break.
The Roadrunners led three times in the third set, but a second CSUB 2-0 comeback against New Mexico State of the season wasn't to be as the Aggies completed the sweep by defeated the Roadrunners 25-16.
In addition to committing more hitting errors (29-5) than the Aggies, Bakersfield had seven service errors. No New Mexico State player had more than eight kills (tournament MVP Desiree Scott) while the Aggies racked up 29 for the night. CSUB managed 25 kills as a team, led by Debora Araujo (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) and Molly O'Hagan (Jr., Tonganoxie, Kan., Tonganoxie HS) who each had six.
Araujo and Fernanda Fernanda Gonçalves (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) were named to the All-Tournament team.
With the victory, New Mexico State earns the WAC's automatic berth into the 2013 NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament which is set to begin Dec. 5-6.
