Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev.--Danielle Miller's three-pointer with 53 seconds to go gave UNLV (2-2) a 76-74 victory over Bakersfield (1-3) in women's basketball action Saturday.
With the Roadrunners leading 72-69 with 1:35 to play, Alana Cesarz hit a pair of free throws to bring UNLV to within one. The Rebels forced a 'Runner turnover as Bakersfield was bringing the ball up court, allowing Cesarz to score for a 73-72 lead. Melissa Sweat (Sr., Bakersfield, Southern Oregon) in her 'Runner debut returned the lead with a jumper at the 57-second mark.
After a CSUB timeout, UNLV moved the ball down, setting up the Miller go-ahead basket. The Lady Rebels got a stop against the 'Runners, forcing Bakersfield to foul. Cesarz missed both of her attempts from the charity stripe, giving CSUB a chance. The Roadrunners called timeout and worked the clock down to five seconds where Tyonna Outland (R-Jr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) missed a jumper that would have tied the score.
Dajy Vines (R-Jr., Oxnard, Calif., Santa Maria HS) scored a career high 20 points to lead Bakersfield. Outland ended the night with 15. Shaquita Smith (Jr., Buffalo, N.Y., ASA College) and Sweat each added 12 for the 'Runners. Anne Callway led UNLV with 20.
"I was proud of how we were about to execute tonight," said Bakersfield head coach Greg McCall. "Having Melissa opens a couple of different things we can do with her on the floor. We got Batabe a great look to try and tie the game, but it didn't fall."
The Roadrunners host Omaha next Saturday at 1 p.m.
