Box Score LAS CRUCES, N.M.--New Mexico State took a straight sets victory against Bakersfield Monday night in Western Athletic Conference volleyball action.
The Aggies (7-8, 2-0 WAC) defeated the Roadrunners (8-8, 1-2 WAC) 25-15 in the opening set and followed it up with a 25-17 set two win. The 'Runners led 16-12 at one point in set three, but NM State went on a 6-0 run and would take the set and the match 25-19. The Aggies out hit the Roadrunners .257-.039 and held a 27-5 advantage in blocks.
Fernanda Gonçalves (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) directed the offense to 27 assists. Kelsee Sawyer (So., Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) paced CSUB with 11 kills. Mariah Alvidrez (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) charted 12 digs while Danika Youngblood (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Western Nebraska C.C.) added 11 digs.
"New Mexico State came out ready for us," said Bakersfield head coach Jolene Shepardson. I like how we got a little better each set. I am also proud of our floor defense. We need to continue to improve in practice so we can be more competitive with these guys in the future."
After 16 matches on the road, the Roadrunners play at home for the first time Thursday night when Bakersfield hosts Chicago State at 7 p.m.
