LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The CSU
Bakersfield men's swimming team improved to 6-3 on the season with a 186-103
victory over Cal Baptist at Loyola Marymount Saturday.
The win puts the Roadrunners on pace to fulfill their quest of
recording their fifth-straight winning season in dual contests.
"We had some great swims today," said CSUB director of swimming
Chris Hansen. "The best thing for me today was to see our freshman step up and
race hard. We swim the No. 1 team in country in Cal in two weeks and our goal
is to race them."
Highlighting CSUB's wins on Saturday were Gabriel Bertrand (So., Tibro,
Sweden (Nykopingssimg Gymnasium), who won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.41, Mitch Wurm (Sr., Mesa, Ariz., Dobson HS), who placed first in the 50 free with a time
of 21.36, and the winning 400 free relay team of Fran Cverle (Jr., Zagreb,
Croatia, Limestone College), Wurm, Alex Daneke (R-Sr., Lodi, Calif., UC Davis)
and Joao Foresto (R-Sr., Marilla, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Cristol Rei HS), who
combined for a time of 3:07.49 to beat the runner-up by over six seconds.
Daneke also placed first in the 200 back with a time of 1:54.06
and Foresto took first place in the 100 free in 47.10. CSUB's Troy Neklason (So.,
Seattle, Wash., Aviation HS) swept the diving events, winning the 1-meter with
260.75 points and taking the 3-meter with 276.35 points.
Also posting wins for the 'Runners were Mario Sutka (Fr.,
Lemon Grove, Calif., St. Augustine HS), who won the 1000 free in 9:41.55,
Jordan Singleton (R-Jr., Mission Hills, Calif., Ventura CC), who won the 100
backstroke in 52.73, and Mitchell Huxhold (So., Escondido, Calif., San Pasqual
HS), who won the 500 free in 4:36.16.
The Roadrunners conclude the regular season
Feb. 7 when CSUB travels to No. 1 Cal for an 11 a.m. start.
