LA JOLLA, Calif.--CSU Bakersfield defeated Loyola Marymount for the first time in a women's swimming dual at UC San Diego Saturday. The 186-102 victory over the Lions is the first in 11 (information available to CSUB Athletic Communications) tries.
"We have never beat LMU in a dual meet before and we did it with out two key players, both Lily Donohue and Jordan Reed were at home with the flu,." said CSUB director of swimming Chris Hansen.
The Roadrunners did not win an individual event on the day but consistent placings helped CSUB earn the victory over Loyola Marymount. The Roadrunners lost 210.5-81.5 to No. 3 UC San Diego in the other portion of the tri-dual.
Ali Gillespie (So., Huntington Beach, Calif., Oregon State) placed second in the 200 free (1:54.84) and third in the 100 free (:53.76). Kelsey Lange (Fr.
San Jose, Calif. (Santa Teresa HS) was second in the 100 free (:53.43). Michaela Paige (Fr., Lompoc, Calif., Cabrillo HS) earned a second place showing in the 500 free (5:09.63).
Jeanette Dove (Jr.
Fontana, Calif., UC Santa Cruz) finished third in the 100 back (1:00.19). Mikaela Jensen (Jr.
Reno, Nev., Golden West College) was third in the 1000 (10:41.29).
Jodi Hanson (R-Sr., Modesto, Calif., Johansen HS) came home third in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.50). Nicolette Goncalves (Fr., Mississauga, Ontario, Erindale Secondary School) was third in the 100 butterfly (:58.50). Kooper Thomas (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Golden Valley HS) placed third in the 1m (140.2) and 3m diving events (150.82).
The 200 medley relay of Dove, Hanson, Goncalves, and Lauren Kaufman (So.
Renton, Wash., TCU) were third (1:48.54). The 400 free relay of Gillespie, Kaufrman, Lange, and Paige finished second in a time of 3:32.93.
"We wanted to show LMU and UCSD where the future of this team is going," Hansen said. "Beating LMU helps our recruiting.Nicolette, Kelsey, Michaela Paige, Mikaela Jensen and Kooper all stepped up to help us with the victory."
CSUB is at UC Davis next Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
