BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield volleyball team put up a valiant effort in its upset bid of New Mexico on Wednesday night, but came up short with a 3-1 loss (20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-20) to the Lobos at the Icardo Center.
Junior outside hitter Fernanda Gonçalves (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C) recorded her second double-double of the season with 33 assists and 12 digs. She also added three kills and one block.
The 'Runners (7-8) entered the match on a five-match winning streak, their longest since moving to Division I in 2007, but the Lobos (15-2) put a stop to it. CSUB didn't go down without a fight and pieced together a 6-0 rally in the fourth set, but the comeback attempt came up short.
"We knew they were a tough team coming in and we put up a battle, but we just didn't battle enough," said CSUB head coach Jolene Shepardson.
Junior outside hitter Debora Araujo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C) led the Roadrunner attack with 16 kills and also added eight digs and one ace, while freshman opposite hitter Kelsee Sawyer (Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) added 10 kills, three blocks and two digs.
The 'Runners will be back in action on Saturday at Loyola Marymount for a 1 p.m. match in Los Angeles.
