BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--CSU Bakersfield took top honors at its own Roadrunner Classic by defeating Utah Valley 3-2 in volleyball action Saturday night in the Icardo Center.
The Roadrunners battled back from a 2-1 deficit to go 3-0 in the tournament and to extend the program's winning streak to four. Debora Araujo (Jr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) led CSUB with a double-double of 18 kills and 11 digs. Molly O'Hagan (So., Tonganoxie, Kan., Tonganoxie HS) nearly in double-double of her own with 12 kills and nine blocks.
Kelsee Saywer (Fr., Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) posted 12 kills while Shayna Guitare (Jr., Torrance, Calif., Pierce College) added 11 kis. Fernanda Gonçalves (Jr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) tallied a season high 55 assists. She also charted five digs, four blocks, and a service ace. Erica Nish led Utah Valley with 13 kills.
Araujo was selected Roadrunner Classic MVP as she earned the most points on the coaches tournament's ballot. Rounding out the all-tournament team were Gonçalves, O'Hagan, Brookelyn Hall of Utah Valley (7-6), Lauren Stringham of Utah Valley, and Victoria Williams of Maryland-Eastern Shore.
"We knew it was going to be a battle tonight, but we were excited to get the win," said CSUB head coach Jolene Shepardson. "We are ecstatic to start off our first home matches this way. The team got more and more comfortable as the weekend went on. We have worked hard to be able to beat a tough team like this."
CSUB continues its homestand Tuesday night when the Roadrunners (6-7) host Cal Poly.
