Capping of a sensational 2012
season, CSU Bakersfield freshman infielder Adrianna Cardoza (Santa Anna,
Calif., La Quinta HS) was honored as the Pacific Coast Softball Conference
Coastal Division Freshman of the Year in announcement of All-PCSC awards released
by the conference on Saturday.
Cardoza also earned a spot on the
All-PCSC Second Team as a second baseman and was the only freshman to be
selected to either the First or Second Teams. CSUB's sophomore utility star
Karissa Veiga (Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) was the only Roadrunner honored as an
All-PCSC First Team member.
Cardoza was joined on the Second
Team by CSUB sophomore infielder Amy Ricciardi (Chino Hills, Calif., Ayala HS).
Senior first baseman Sara Smith (Northridge, Calif., Biola Univ.) and sophomore
shortstop Shay Fryer (San Diego, Calif., University HS) both received honorable
mention.
The individual awards and All-Coastal Division selections
were voted on by the six head coaches of the Coastal Division. Saint
Mary's junior right-hander Jessica Lemmon was named the Coastal Division
Pitcher of the Year and Saint Mary's head coach Jessica Hanaseth earned Coach
of the Year honors. It was the second career Coach of the Year award for
Hanaseth, who guided the Gales to their second Coastal Division title in three
years.
Cardoza, who played most of the
season at second base, but also saw time at third base and even pitched,
started all 20 of CSUB's PCSC games this season. She recorded a .309 batting
average with 10 runs scored, seven RBIs, three doubles, seven walks, was hit by
a pitch three times, posted a .415 on-base percentage and a .364 slugging
percentage.
In winning the award, Cardoza
becomes the first Roadrunner to win PCSC Freshman of the Year honors in the
program's history. She is only the second player in the program's history to be
tabbed as a conference freshman of the year as Renee Rubio was named the
All-CCAA Freshman of the Year in 2003 when CSUB was still a Division II team.
"First
off, congratulations to Adrianna. She had a great season and really
turned it on during conference," said CSUB head coach Crissy Buck.
"There was a tremendous about of growth in her game this year and it is
reflective of the growth for CSUB and a great sign for the future.
Hopefull this is the first of many awards for this program. To be the
only freshman to be selected to the first or second team is really
exciting."
Veiga finished second on the PCSC
leaderboard with a .456 batting average in conference play, was sixth in
on-base percentage (.516) and tied for eight in hits with 26. She becomes only
the fourth player in CSUB history to be honored as a PCSC First Team selection.
She was also the only sophomore to be nominated for Coastal Division Player of
the Year.
"For Karissa to be selected to the first team after all she went through and battling injuries, really says a lot about her character and her talent," Buck said. "It is just another sign that our program is moving in the right direction."
Ricciardi, who got hot when PCSC
action started and kept it up until the end of the season, finished as the
co-leader of RBIs in PCSC play with 21 and was second in home runs with seven.
She was eighth in slugging percentage at .687, tied for eighth in runs scored
at 16 and finished conference play with a .343 batting average. Ricciardi, who received PCSC Coastal Division honorable mention in 2011 as a freshman, ended the
season as the PCSC Coastal Division Player of the Week after scoring or driving
in 15 of CSUB's 28 runs in the four-game series against Santa Clara.
Smith, who transferred to CSUB prior
to the 2012 season and filled a huge void at first base, hit .309 in PCSC play
with 10 RBIs, three runs scored, two doubles, one triple, was hit by a pitch 10
times and drew five walks. She had a .457 on-base percentage and a .382
slugging percentage.
Fryer also hit .309 and had 10 RBIs
in PCSC action in addition to scoring seven runs, hitting four doubles and
recording a .368 slugging percentage and a .319 on-base percentage.
Fischer,
who earned co-Coastal Division Player of the Year accolades in 2010, produced
one of the most prolific years at the plate in PCSC history. The native of Simi
Valley, Calif., finished the year hitting .492 with 23 home runs and 59 RBI –
setting new conference season marks for batting average and home runs and tying
the single-season RBI record. Her .492 average currently leads the nation, and
will more than likely finish atop the national rankings at the conclusion of
postseason play. The 23 home runs also ranks second in the country. She
finished her career setting nine PCSC career records, sitting atop the career
charts for batting average (.387); home runs (65); doubles (51); RBI (172);
runs scored (184); total bases (494); slugging percentage (.784); on-base
average (.494); and walks (127). She also finished third on the PCSC career hit
list with 244.
