LA JOLLA, Calif.—CSU
Bakersfield (23-17) freshman goalie Alex Bayer (Fr., Alta Loma, Calif., Los Osos HS) made saves on three consecutive
Sonoma State power play chances as the Roadrunners defeated Sonoma State (10-21)
13-11 in the consolation semifinals of the WWPA Tournament Saturday night at
the Canyonview Aquatics Center.
Adrienne Bisharat scored two goals in the first quarter to
give the Seawolves a 3-2 advantage after the first eight minutes. Jessica Browning (Jr., Lake Forest,
Calif., El Toro HS) scored a pair
of goals in the second to tie the score.
Bisharat gave the lead back to Sonoma State
with her third goal with 34 seconds to go in the second quarter. Sam Shead's (Jr.,
Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) power
play goal with one second remaining in the first half made it 5-5 heading into
halftime.
Both teams scored playing with 6-on-5 advantages to start the third quarter.
Shead posted a hat trick with a backhand shot from two-meters to give CSUB the
lead for the first time (7-6) with 3:25 left in the third quarter. Behind a
pair of Alexa May goals, the Seawolves went on a 4-1 spurt to end the third
quarter with the 10-8 advantage.
Browning made it a hat trick to get the Roadrunners to
within one on CSUB's second possession of the final quarter. With Sonoma State
leading 11-10, Adams recorded a hat trick with
her third goal at 6:00.
Janelle Shelby (Fr., San Diego, Calif.,
Grossmont HS) scored what proved to be the gamewinner at the 2:45 mark. It was at that point,
the Seawolves had the three consecutive power plays in which Bayer saves. Also during this 1:45 span, Bishart was
awarded a penalty shot in which Bayer made a key save. Adams'
career high fourth goal on a 6-on-5 advantage gave CSUB a two-goal lead with
2:00 to play.
“Alex came up huge today,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “Her
saves in the fourth quarter changed the momentum of the game and energized our
team. Bianca's performance today was outstanding. It was a team victory. We had
three starters (foul out) and our entire team contributed to the win.”
The winner of the CSUB-Sonoma State match will play for
fifth place against Colorado State at noon on Sunday.
