BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSUB Bakersfield softball team dropped both games to the University of the Pacific on Tuesday, falling 9-3 and 10-0 in nonleague action at Roadrunner Softball Complex.
CSUB shortstop Myshayla Fryer (So., San Diego, Calif., University HS) led the offense on the day, combining for three hits in the two games, including a two-run single in Game 1. The bases-loaded single came in the fifth inning, when CSUB was trailiung 5-0 and the 'Runners (7-21) made it close by putting up three runs to cut the lead to 5-3. The Tigers went on the offensive in the top of the sixth however and scored three runs on their way to sealing the 9-3 victory. CSUB center fielder Laura King (R-Jr., Camarillo, Calif., UNLV) went 1-for-3 in the game and added a run and sophomore left fielder Karissa Veiga (Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) added two hits for the 'Runners.
Pacific pitcher Tori Shepard (7-4) relieved Tiger starter Nikki Armagost in the fifth inning and was able to escape out of the bases-loaded jam. Shepard then started Game 2 and hurled a complete-game four-hitter in the 10-0 victory for the Tigers (20-11). The win was Pacific head coach Brian Kolze's 600th career win.
In Game 2, freshman right fielder Bree Sandoval (La Verne, Calif., Bonita HS), King, Fryer and senior designated player Ashley Nahale (Fremont, Calif., Ohlone College) all hit singles.
The 'Runners will now hit the road to play a doubleheader against UC Riverside in Riverside on Wednesday. Game 1 will begin at 1 p.m. and the two-game series will be the final non-conference action of the season before CSUB opens up Pacific Coast Softball Conference play on Saturday and Sunday with a pair of home doubleheaders against the University of San Diego.
