BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The CSU Bakersfield softball team dropped a doubleheader to the University of Connecticut on Tuesday as the Huskies downed the Roadrunners 9-0 in Game 1 and 15-0 in Game 2 at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
In the first game, CSUB (6-15) was held to three hits by the pitching duo of Lauren Duggan and Ali Adelman and the 'Runners missed an opportunity with the bases loaded in the third inning. The Huskies (4-8) spread out their runs on four home runs, two by Emily O'Donnell, and sealed the win with a four-run fifth and final inning.
Recording singles for CSUB were first baseman Sara Smith (Sr., Northridge, Calif., Biola Univ.), shortstop Myshayla Fryer (So., San Diego, Calif., University HS) and right fielder Bree Sandoval (Fr., La Verne, Calif., Bonita HS).
In Game 2, UConn's Kiki Saveriano limited the 'Runners to three hits in the complete-game shutout. Second baseman Adrianna Cardoza (Fr., Santa Anna, Calif., La Quinta HS) posted two of those singles and designated player Emily Bliss (R-Jr., Northridge, Calif., Chaminade Prep) added the other.
The game stayed close through four innings, with the Huskies only holding a 4-0 lead, but then UConn exploded for an 11-run fifth inning that included two grand slams. The two grand slams ties an NCAA Division I record for most grand slams in an inning and the Huskies became the fourth team to accomplish the feat. The Huskies totaled four homers in the game.
The 'Runners won't have much of a break as they will now head south to play in the San Diego Classic II, hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State, Friday through Sunday. The first game will be at USD against Quinnipiac on Friday at 11:30 a.m. and then the 'Runners will also face Valparaiso at 2 p.m. on Friday.
