BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield men's and women's track and field
teams have released their 2012-13 schedule, a slate that features nine outdoor
meets including their second Great West Conference Championship.
The 2012-13 season will be the second for the Roadrunners as members of the
GWC, but the new season will feature some changes. First of all, the season
will be the beginning of a new era as Marcia Mansur-Wentworth has taken over as
head coach of the program after long-time coach Alan Collatz retired as head
coach after the 2011-12 season. Collatz will be returning as a part-time coach
of the throwers under the title of Coach Emeritus.
Another change for CSUB is that
the men's squad will not be competing in the indoor season and the women's team
will be competing in the indoor season as a member of the GWC for the first
time. The indoor season will feature four meets, beginning with the Lumberjack
Invite at Northern Arizona University on Jan. 12, 2013, followed by the NAU
Open (Feb. 2) and the Run For The Dream Invitational at Fresno State on Feb.
17. The indoor portion of the season will end at the GWC Championships in
Houston, Texas Feb. 23-24.
For the men's and women's squads, the outdoor season, which features eight
regular-season meets up and down California, will kickoff Mar. 8-9 at the Ben
Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton. The final regular-season meet will
be held on Apr. 27 at the Steve Scott Invitational at UC Irvine. Then the
'Runners will compete in their final GWC Championship May 10-11 in Houston,
Texas. CSUB put up an impressive showing in its first year as a member in 2012
and returns GWC defending hammer champion Thomas Judge (Sr., Bakersfield,
Calif., Garces HS) in 2013. This will be the final season of competing in the
GWC for CSUB, which will be joining the Western Athletic Conference beginning
in the 2013-14 season.
In other news, junior hurdler/sprinter Richard Maestre has been named as
the captain for the 'Runners for the 2012-13 season.
"Richie is a dedicated student-athlete and an excellent leader,"
Mansur-Wentworth said. "He is respected and liked by his teammates."
In more worthy news, CSUB sophomore distance runner Rudy Castro (Bakersfield, Calif., South
HS) has proven his dedication as a Roadrunner as he recently go the Roadrunner
logo tattooed on his right shoulder. To check out a picture of the tattoo,
which Castro said is his "first and last tattoo," click here.
