FORT COLLINS, Colo.--Sam Martin hit a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining to give Colorado State (3-8) a 56-54 victory over CSU Bakersfield (2-9) in women's basketball play Sunday afternoon.
The Rams erased a nine-point Roadrunner halftime lead with a 18-5 run to open the second half.The teams exchanged the lead several times in the closing half. Ciarra Ford (Sr., Long Beach, Calif., Mt. Sac College) gave CSUB a 54-53 lead with 3:43 remaining
The Rams missed two field goals and turned the ball over on their next four possessions. The Roadrunners couldn't converted either, missing from the field on their ensuing possessions. Colorado State fouled Ford with 26 seconds remaining, but she missed the front end of a 1-n-1 leading to a Rams' timeout with 17 seconds to go.
Colorado State's Caitlin Duffy was fouled nine seconds later. Duffy tied the game on the first attempt. She missed the second, but Martin was fouled on the offensive rebound. She made both of her attempts for the gamewinner. The Roadrunners called timeout, setting up a play for Janae Coffee (R-So., Fresno, Calif., Long Beach State) in the post, but Coffee missed the layup at the buzzer, securing the victory for the Rams.
Amber Williams (Sr., Fontana, Calif., Etiwanda HS) led CSUB with 17 points. Marilyn Naderhoff (R-So., Sante, Calif., West Hills HS) scored 11. Duffy led all scorers with 22 points. Martin had 14 for Colorado State.
CSUB retruns home Wednesday night when the Roadrunners host Santa Clara at 7 p.m.
